Automatic Queen Promotion

The Problem:

Hi, today I played a game. As most players I have automatic queen promotion turned on.
I had a position where promoting to a knight would have won the game, but with one minute on my clock I wasn´t able to find where I have to turn it off.

The solution?:
I see this is one of the only settings in a game I would like to turn off/on, so my idea would be to give it a key that will turn it off as long as they key is pressed. There should also be a hint in the settings that when the key is pressed it bring back the menu.

Let us use the shift key for this. As long as I press shift and promote I get this menu to choose from what piece I want. It will Not affect the settings for the next game or the next promotion.

I haven´t the skills to do it by myself. So if someone with skills would find this helpfull I would be thankfull.

Thanks for reading this.

Yup, that would be great. I changed my setting to "only if premove" after losing a couple games because of the auto-queen, and of course, in short time settings choosing the queen takes forever. Using the Shift key would work better.
An distinguished solution for a problem bothering many players (mostly in a theoretical way though...). I really liked when the settings was pressent as a tab in the chat section. However: I only used it to cheat (myself) while playing blindfold so I'm much more in favor of your suggestion :-)
In WinBoard this problem is solved by 'detour under-promotion' as a replacement for the simplistic 'Always promote to Queen' option. With this setting, when you move the Pawn to the promotion square directly, as you would normally do, you will get a Queen. In fact the Pawn will morph into a Queen as soon as you 'pick it up' to alert you to this. But if you first drag the Pawn/Queen backwards (i.e. away from the promotion rank) it starts to morph into other pieces, starting with Knight.

So in the rare case you want to under-promote you simply drag the Pawn backwards until you see the piece you want, and then drag it forward to the promotion square (with the choice frozen as soon as you start to drag it forward). This requires almost no extra time, as you would have had to drag (or at least click on) the Pawn anyway. Other solutions typically require you to move the mouse pointer out of the board area.
#4 This sounds very nice a mecanism once you're used to it, if a little odd to learn at first (how do you get a hint that you're supposed to move backwards ?). I would like that if it were implemented.

Also, it really sounds that "detour under-promotion" is to the current menu what drag-and-drop is to "click origin and destination squares". Some people will prefer clicking while others would rather move their mouse around.

(Right now I notice there is this odd thing about promotion that you can drag and drop a pawn of promotion, and then change your mind about moving the pawn, by clicking out of the promotion menu. The pawn moves backwards and you can then make any other move instead.)
In WinBoard there is room for a message to be displayed above the board (which is also used for displaying the moves that are played in SAN). When you grab a 7th-rank Pawn the message 'Pull Pawn backwards to under-promote' will appear there.
