I think a great addition would be a mode that would pit players against each other in different, randomly-assigned mid-, late-, or end game scenarios. It wouldn't be so much about winning or losing but about allowing players to practice these scenarios that are otherwise rare or difficult to come by. I think it could offer a great tool to address weaknesses in different parts of your game.
With a massive database of games to draw from, there are surely countless interesting scenarios where both sides are nearly even, but in precarious situations. I imagine an algorithm similar to the Training puzzles could be used to identify games where one move drastically altered the favor of the game during the later phases, and bad examples could be filtered out over time by player voting.
